Day 1
Arrive Lisbon and overnight. Explore this beautiful city by foot or tram.


Day 2
Transfer to Santa Iria de Azoia - and walk to Vila Franca de Xira, 18kms

Join the River Tejo and make your way to your overnight destination known for its bullfighting festival each year.

Day 3
Vila Franca de Xira – Azambuja, 20kms

Continue following the River Tejo inland through bull and horse breeding territory to the lovely town of Azambuja, famed for its annual bull run through the streets of the town. Olé!

Day 4
Azambuja – Santarem, 27 kms

The town of Santarem sits 110 metres above sea level and is your highest point on the route. Walk via vineyards, orchard groves and cropping fields to this wonderful Moorish City. Be sure to visit the ‘Sun Gate’ to take in magnificent views and the setting sun.

Day 5
Santarem – Golega , 29 kms

Today’s walk through small villages and bull and horse studs is on relatively flat land heading north-West on the banks of the River Tejo.

Day 6
Golega – Tomar, 28 kms

This morning make your way to ‘Quinta da Cardiga’, one of the most beautiful manor houses in all of Portugal. From there travel through rolling hills and little villages to the historic city of Tomar.

Day 7
Tomar - Alvaiazere, 27kms

An adventurous day and a change of landscape awaits you. Woodlands, valleys and old Roman roads and farm paths make for a wonderful and scenic walk

Day 8
Alvaiazere – Alvorge, 21kms

This morning begins with a steep climb followed by a gradual descent. Cross the 17 t century bridge of Ponte da Cal in Ansiao then follow the Camino through rolling hills, olive groves and farmland to your overnight destination.

Day 9
Alvorge – Condeixa, 17 kms

Today enjoy the shade of the eucalyptus and pine forests as well as many olive groves before reaching the day’s final destination of Condeixa A Nova.

Day 10
Condexia - Coimbra , 15kms

Walk though picturesque countryside dotted with vineyards, olive groves and forests. Climb over the Alto de Cruz de Mourocos at 190m to reach the original capital of Portugal, Coimbra. A visit to the 13 th century Gothic Cathedral and University, UNESCO certified and one of the oldest in the world is not to be missed in this lively, cultural city.

Day 1
Arrive Coimbra and overnight.


Day 2
Coimbra to Mealhada, 22kms

On leaving Coimbra climb to Cioga do Monte and then enjoy a relatively flat walk through valleys and towns along the remains of an old Roman road to Mealhada’s vineyards and excellent wine.

Day 3
Mealhada to Agueda, 23kms

An easy trail today via vineyards to the city of Avelas de Caminho then on to the town of Agueda on the banks of the Certima River.

Day 4
Agueda to Albergaria, 15kms

Follow an ancient Roman road through eucalyptus and pine forests. Cross over the Rio Marnel on a beautiful Roman bridge. At the end of your day there is a short climb into Albergaria. Transfer back to Agueda for your overnight accommodation (included).

Day 5
Albergaria to Oliveira de Azemeris, 18k
ms
This morning return to Albergaria by transfer to begin your days hike through woodlands and town to the lovely, historic town of Oliveria de Azameis. Where a visit to the Matriz de Sao Miguel Church is a highlight.

Day 6
Oliveira de Azemeris to Malaposta, 18kms

Head across rolling hills with a climb to Sao Joao da Madeira at 220m. Pass the town of Arrifana with is distinctive blue church before making your way to the well preserved cobbled Roman Road that leads to your overnight stop of Malaposta

Day 7
Malaposta to Porto, 23 km

Today your Camino will take you gradually downhill and as you near Porto you will enjoy refreshing sea breezes off the Atlantic Ocean. Follow the Roman road and cross the River of Gold on the famed Ponte Luiz I Bridge to arrive in the stunning and historic city centre of Porto. Explore the old city centre which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996. The colourful riverfront, the Duoro River with is Port wine boats, the friendly locals and the
tasty local cuisine are all yours to enjoy - not to mention the a glass of Port or three!

Arrive in Porto and overnight.


Day 2
Porto to Povoa do Varzim, 23kms

Today take the metro to the outskirts of Porto and the coast where you begin Stage 3 of the Camino Portuguese. Follow the coastline through fishing villages, past forts and churches and along sandy beaches. Once you arrive at your overnight stay, freshen up then explore the picturesque Povoa do Varzim harbour and its medieval district

Day 3
Povoa do Varzim to Esposende, 20kms

Today you’ll take in fabulous views of the town and coast from Convento de Santa Clara. Follow the trail through the Coastal Natural Park, Parque Natural do Litoral Norte, to reach your overnight stop of Esposende.

Day 4
Esposende to Viana do Castelo, 23
kms
Continue on along the coast and through the Natural Park. Take the time to stop and sample the local cuisine en route. On reaching wonderful Viana do Castelo, take the funicular to Basilica de Santa Luzia and revel in the magnificent coastal views.

Day 5
Viana do Castelo to Praia de Ancora, 18kms

Today enjoy meandering the Atlantic coastline with a stop for a swim at one of the many beaches and a bite at one of the seaside villages along the way.

Day 6
Praia de Ancora to A Guarda, 15kms

Today is your last day in Portugal. Carry on along the coast to Caminha on the mouth of the Minho River. Take the ferry over to Galicia (Spain). Note ferry tickets must be paid direct. Continue to A Guarda and be sure to visit its famous hilltop ‘castro’ – a great archaeological site that shows a traditional Celtic village from around 2000 years ago.

Day 1
Arrive in A Guarda


Day 2
A Guarda to Oia, 15kms

Depart the fishing village of A Guarda for a short day’s walking north, following the coastline.

Day 3
Oia to Baiona, 15kms

Another easy day along the coastline to reach the busy seaside town and marina of Baiona. You will have time to visit the town’s attractions including the Museo de La Carabela Pinta and the Monumento Encuentro entre dos Mundos. And of course, time to just sit and enjoy your surrounds in the medieval, historical centre.

Day 4
Baiona to Vigo, 23kms

Follow the coast to Nigran and the white sandy beach of Praia America. Stop off for a rest, a swim and the fabulous views of the Bay of Vigo and the Illas Cies, the National Park islands on the horizon.

Day 5
Vigo to Arcade, 22kms

Today is your last day on the coast so make the most of the sea breezes and swimming. And if you’re an oyster fan, they’re plentiful and famously delicious at your overnight stop in the fishing village of Aracde.

Day 6
Arcade to Pontevedra, 13kms

Today cross the Verdugo River via the Ponte Sampaio, the bridge where Napoleon suffered one of his greatest defeats in Spain. From there take a cobbled road to the 13 th century Church of Santa Maria and look back across the Bay of Vigo before forging forward to Pontevedra and its well preserved old town.

Day 7
Pontevedra to Caldas de Reis, 24kms

Plenty of dappled shade is provided on today’s walk through chestnut groves and pine and eucalyptus forests. En route see a statue of St James with his walking stick, pointing out ‘the way’ to pilgrims. Pass through the village of Tivo with its fountain and public washing area before reaching the renowned Roman spa town and healing waters of Caldas de Reis.

Day 8
Caldas de Rei to Padron, 19kms

Leave town today via the River Umia and join the trail for a gradual climb through forests tothe village of Santa Marina. Descend to Padron after crossing the River Fontenlo.

Day 9
Padron to Santiago de Compostela, 26kms

This is it! Your final day on your pilgrimage to Santiago! Visit the Sanctuary of Escravitude, and the Alto de O Milladoiro from where pilgrims kneeled when they first saw the spires of the Cathedral of Santiago. And finally … you’re there, in the historic centre and the Plaza del Obradoiro where all pilgrims converge. Your Camino is complete. Soak up the architecture and wonderful atmosphere of this cultural and spiritual UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Day 10
Arrangements end after breakfast. We do recommend an extra night in Santiago de Compostela. We can also make arrangements for you to continue your pilgrimage to Finisterre and Muxia, or a day trip to Finisterre – the “end of the world”. And don’t forget to factor in the time to get your ‘Compostela’ (Pilgrim Passport) certified!
